| DIY Painted Kitchen Cabinets |
My Kitchen was so outdated, the cabinets didn't match and it looked so small. There's nothing like a fresh coat or 4 of white paint to brighten up the place. This took me just over a week to do because I am a SAHM of a toddler and I could only work on it while she was sleeping. If i could have worked uninterrupted it probably would have taken 3-4days.
After consulting with my dad (who has done this a few times before) I went to my local Home Depot for supplies:
Sand paper ( I used 150 for the wood and 80 for between primer coats)
Electric sander
Screw driver/ drill
1 Gallon Kilz primer
1 Gallon Bright white high gloss indoor paint
2 Mini foam rollers
1-2 Paint brushes
1-2 Mini paint trays
Remove all doors, drawers, hardware and shelves if doing interior too (I didn't). Wipe down all cabinetry with TSP. Sand all doors, drawers, shelves and the shell of cabinets with electric sander or by hand. An electric sander is fast and easy but loud and messy. After sanding, wipe down with damp cloth to remove the sanding dust.
Now you're ready for primer. Follow the direction of the wood grain with the first coat of primer using a combination of the paint brush and mini roller. Lightly sand after primer is dry and apply second coat. If your wanting a cleaner look with no grain, apply second coat of primer in opposite direction of the grain. 3rd or 4th coat may be needed, just remember to lightly sand in between each coat of primer. Let primer completely dry. Now apply your High Gloss interior paint pretty much the same way you did the primer. 2-3 coats may be needed. Let it dry completely. Put the hardware, doors and shelves back on. Instead of buying new knobs and hardware I just got a can of black spray paint made for metals and spray painted mine. They're new enough for me.
Redoing your cabinets is really a lot easier then you think, but it is VERY time consuming.
